How do I maintain the perfect lawn?

Sod is a living thing and proper maintenance is required for any grass to effectively combat weeds, pests, and diseases. It is the responsibility of the customer to properly maintain and care for their yard. A healthy lawn requires adequate watering, fertilizing and maintenance to remain healthy. Forgoing proper maintenance could put the health of the lawn in jeopardy.

Not sure which grass is best for you? Click on the Types of Sod link at the top of the page to learn more about each grass.

What is Bahia grass?

Bahia-grass is a good low input warm-season lawn and pasture grass. Bahia can be easily maintained and provides a decent "medium utility" turfgrass lawn for the southern state areas.

Bahiagrass requires a moderate amount of lawn grass care, maintenance, and mowing. Common pest includes grub worms, web-worms, and mole crickets.  Bahiagrass is known for going dormant in the winter months and coming back in the spring.

In order to prevent freeze damage to the roots, an application of winter rye in late-fall is recommended. Applying winter rye to your lawn will help keep it green all winter long.

What is St. Augustine grass?

St. Augustine is a warm-season lawn grass that is popular for use in tropical and subtropical regions. It is a medium maintenance grass that forms a thick, carpetlike lawn, crowding out most weeds and other grasses. It is a dark green grass with broad, flat blades. St. Augustine is used primarily for lawns and does not tolerate high traffic as well as other turf-grasses.

After being established, St. Augustine depends largely on management. Mowing, fertilization and supplemental watering are required to maintain a dense, green, weed-free turf.

Common pests include chinch bugs, armyworms, grubs, and sod web-worms. Consistent and proper pest control regimens are required to maintain a healthy lawn.

Common diseases include brown patch, gray leaf spot, rust, downy mildew, and many others. Most are caused by fungi and can be controlled with good management and fungicides.

It is highly recommended to find a lawn and pest control business who can help maintain weeds and control bugs.

How much do I water?

When first installed you should water every day for about an hour for thirty days. After the grass is established (when you tug on the grass and it no longer lifts) you should water once a week for about 30-40 minutes a zone. Remember, do not OVER water! Too much water can be harmful and damage your lawn. Too much water also make your lawn more prone to pesky insects and diseases.

When do I fertilize?

Different sod types require different fertilizers. Different types of grass also get fertilized and treated different times of the year. It is best practice to contact your local pest control/ lawn management company who can help you maintain your lawn.

If you do choose to Do It Yourself, double-check the back of the bag to ensure that your sod type is listed. Some   Southern Weed and Feeds do not state that they are not for St. Augustine or Bahia on the front, however, if you READ THE FINE PRINT on the back it will specifically say that it is not for those grasses.
